Richard describes his shamanistic experiences of what he saw on ayahuasca that are very, very similar to my psychic experiences of seeing parasitic entities who envelop life force energy in people who give themselves over to it in exchange for worldly/materialistic/"insider" knowledge/access/power. 

You can call this whatever you want: possession, satanic "deals with the devil", a hijacking of the soul,

 but I believe the best term used in reference to it was the one phrased in film The Neverending Story: 

The Nothing.
